Purpose
This standard aims to achieve consistency around data collected for Name Suffix and the format in which they are collected and stored in across the University.
This standard is based on the general Person Name standards laid out by the ISO Standard Tag Set. In addition, various Subject Matter Experts at UBC have been consulted to derive a list of accepted values for Name Suffix.
This standard applies to all UBC applications collecting Person Suffixes. Exceptions are listed in the Dispensation section.
Standard
Name Suffix may be a part of the person’s name regardless of the type of name. It is defined as code(s) or title(s) used after a person's name.
Academic Credentials and Professional Designations are different attributes from Name Suffix and will be addressed in separate standards.
The Government of Canada's terminology and Linguistic Data Bank recommends that no more than two abbreviations (academic credential or professional designation) follow a person's name. Select the two highest honors of different types and list them in the following order of precedence: first, distinctions conferred directly by the Crown (VC, QC, etc.); second, university degrees; and third, letters denoting membership in societies and other distinctions1.
Name Suffix Standard
A list and definitions of accepted values for Suffix can be found in Collibra.
Compliance
This standard about Name Suffix must be complied with through every stage of the data lifecycle with the exception of any dispensations (see Dispensation section):
- All applications must collect Name Suffix as recommended in this standard.
- Enterprise Data Integration must adopt this standard.
Dispensation
Legacy systems are exempt from this data standard. As systems are replaced, adoption of this standard is required. Examples of legacy systems are:
- Student Information System (SIS)
- Human Resource Management System (HRMS)
- Finance Management System (FMS)
As existing systems change to adopt this standard, the Enterprise Data Governance team needs to be informed.
