Purpose
This standard aims to achieve consistency around the data collected for an individual's immigration status and documentation that allows them to legally work or study at UBC, as well as the determination of fees that may be applicable based on their status. This standard replaces the Visa Type Data Standard published in October 2018.
This standard applies to all UBC applications collecting immigration status. Exceptions are listed in the Dispensation section.
Standard
The following are the accepted data values for Canadian Immigration Status that allow a person to study or work at UBC:
Accepted Code Value | Canadian Immigration Status | Definition |

CANC | Canadian Citizen | A person who obtained citizenship by birth or an immigrant who has obtained citizenship by naturalization in Canada. |
CAPR | Canadian Permanent Resident | A landed immigrant or a citizen who has been granted the right to live in Canada permanently by immigration authorities. |
CATR | Canadian Temporary Resident | A person from another country who has a work or study permit, visitor record, diplomatic or official visa, protected person status, or refugee claimant status awaiting a decision from the Refugee Protection Board (RPD). |
The following are the accepted data values for Canadian Immigration Documentation that can be used to validate the status of a person. Information captured for any of the documents below needs to have an Effective Start Date and Effective End Date.

PERM | Canadian Permanent Resident Record | A document that can show proof of Canadian permanent residence. These include:

STUV | Study Permit | A document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that authorizes a foreign national to study at an educational institution in Canada for the duration of the program of study. |
SPNR | Study Without a Permit (Authorized) | Used for a student that is completing their studies outside of Canada i.e. studying internationally. |
WPOP | Open Work Permit | A type of document that allows a person to work for any employer in Canada, except for an employer:
Examples of Open work permits include: Spousal open work permit, Bridging Open work permit, and Post-graduation Work Permit. |
WPLA | Work Permit (LMIA) | A type of document issued to a person taking a job in Canada who can only work as per the conditions, and the corresponding Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). |
WPLE | Work Permit (LMIA-exempt) | A type of document issued to a person taking a job in Canada who can only work as per the conditions, and the corresponding LMIA-exempt Offer of Employment. The eligibility criteria of an LMIA exemption must be met. |
WPCO | Co-op/Internship Work Permit | A type of document granted to foreign students who wish to participate in a co-op or internship program in a Canadian institution. |
VIST | Visitor Record | A status document issued to a visa-required or visa-exempt foreign national who is seeking to enter or is in Canada. It specifies the conditions and validity period of their temporary stay in Canada. |
DIPL | Diplomatic Visa | An official document granted to a person entitled, under international and domestic law, to diplomatic or consular (and similar) privileges and immunities, who intend to travel to Canada for an official purpose or to pass through Canada on the way to an assignment in another state and who come within one of the categories listed under the Diplomatic Visa section here. |
OFFI | Official Visa | An official document granted to a person entitled, under international and domestic law, to official (functional) privileges and immunities, who intend to travel to, or to pass through, Canada for an official purpose and who come within one of the categories listed under the Official Visa section here. |
PPRE | Protected Person Record | A document that confirms that a person has been granted "Protected Person Status" as a Convention Refugee or a Person in Need of Protection in Canada. This includes:

REFG | Refugee Claimant Record | A document that can show proof of a refugee claim in Canada. This includes:
Note: This value must be selected together with the value "Study Permit" or the respective Work Permit for an individual to study or work at UBC. |
WPNR | Work Without a Permit (Authorized) |
A Business Visitor record with a notation regarding the work authorization in Canada. See International Mobility Program: Authorization to work without a work permit for a list of authorized types of work that do not require a work permit. |
Compliance
This standard about immigration status and documents must be complied with every stage of the data lifecycle with the exception of any dispensations (see Dispensation section):
- All applications must collect immigration status, visas and permits as recommended in this standard.
- Enterprise Data Integration must adopt this standard.
Dispensation
Legacy systems are exempt from this data standard. Examples of legacy systems are:

As systems are replaced, adoption of this standard is required. As existing systems change to adopt this standard, the Enterprise Data Governance team needs to be informed. .
