What is DxL?

The Digital Experience Lab (DXL) is an initiative aimed at driving innovation by experimenting with artificial intelligence and how it can be deployed to reduce cost, improve service and enhance experience.

UBC Office of the CIO (OCIO) has established a Digital Experience Lab (DxL) with the mandate to help the organization safely experiment with artificial intelligence (AI) by testing and providing proof of concepts to meet business needs.

Why a Digital Experience Lab?

DxL, in collaboration with the key stakeholders and leaders at UBC, is helping to:

  • Provide a safe ground to shape the AI solution roadmap for optimization and transformation of admin functions using AI technologies
  • Enhance decision-making processes for campus administration through AI modeling and solutions

The DxL Team

In addition to AI engineers, the DxL team includes advisors at the university including members from Legal Counsel and UBC IT (Enterprise Architecture, Data Governance, Client Service Managers, and Change Management).

Current Projects

UBC Policy Bot

The UBC Policy and Standards Bot project focuses on legal and compliance requirements at the institution. The project designed a policy bot to be used as a personal AI assistant tool with easy referral to UBC’s Board & Senate approved policies and information privacy and security related standards. A LLM using RAG on a ML platform will help users navigate and locate policies. Trained on specific UBC data, the degree is creativity is carefully controlled.  The UBC Policy Bot project was a collaboration with legal teams to ensure adherence to institutional policies.

Objectives:

  • Easy access to UBC Policies for informed decision making
  • Test Generative AI (LLM) options and best fit for use cases
  • A test case for Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)

Projects In Development

Other projects in development include website chatbots, a smart triage for call centre, and UBC LLM.

Website Chatbots

DXL is currently working to develop website chatbots which will enhance user experience by providing instant assistance and support. These chatbots will help visitors navigate UBC's websites, answer frequently asked questions, and guide them through products or services.

Smart Triage for Call Centre

Smart Triage is a machine learning-powered tool designed to streamline IT service management by intelligently routing service tickets to the appropriate department. This empowers IT teams to focus on resolving issues faster while ensuring a smoother experience for end-users.

UBC LLM

DXL is embarking on an exciting project to develop a UBC large language model (LLM). By developing an in-house LLM, UBC can customize it to better understand and support the UBC’s unique terminology, concepts, and context, offering more accurate and personalized assistance to students and faculty.
