A successful Data Governance program is built on careful planning to address the needs of the University and its business operations. Data Governance tools are an important factor for supporting these goals and to meet the objectives of UBC's Data Governance strategy.
Data Modelling
Data modelling is the process of discovering, analyzing, and scoping data requirements, which are then represented and communicated in a data model. Data modelling tools assist with capturing this information, by representing data entities and their relationships visually.
Metadata Management
Metadata management is the administration of data that describes other data. It involves establishing processes that ensure data can be integrated, accessed, shared, linked, analyzed, and maintained to best effect across the enterprise. Therefore, it can enable and improve effective business intelligence. Additionally, much like how a library card catalogue describes the location of a book, a metadata management repository enables the discovery of data assets.
Extraction, Tranformation and Loading
Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) is the general procedure of copying data from one or more sources into a destination system which represents the data differently from the source or in a different context than the source, playing a critical role in data integration.
